Staff and Schedule Changes

January 16, 2013

Dear Lake Families,

In the past few weeks Lake IB has experienced a few staffing changes. As partners in your child’s education, it is very important that we notify you about these changes due to the impact it can potentially have on your student’s class schedule. The school will implement the necessary changes to student schedules next week.

Lake IB students who have been in Mr. Molina’s Spanish classes will no longer receive Spanish instruction for the rest of the school year. Also, students in Mr. Mason’s math intervention course will no longer take this class. All seventh graders will continue to receive daily, small group math intervention/acceleration with a Math Fellow. In addition, some sixth and eighth grade students will receive push-in support, meaning that a Math Fellow will work with students inside their current math class.

Students that were involved in either or both of these courses will instead have an additional art, music, or physical education class. Parents are welcome to make a special request for their student to continue receiving Spanish language instruction, however, this will be determined on a per pupil basis depending on space availability and potential for success in an Advanced Spanish course. Upon request, school administration will discuss placement with the student, parent, and Spanish teacher to determine whether or not it is appropriate to place the student in an Advanced Spanish class. Ms. Buhl, visual arts teacher, and Mr. Girtin, physical education teacher, will return to full-time teaching positions at Lake IB in order to meet the needs of increased student participation in these courses.

Additionally, the seventh grade science teacher, Mr. Lee, has decided to pursue a career in the health sciences field and is no longer teaching. We are currently in the process of replacing this position and have already selected a candidate. If you have a student in seventh grade, you will receive a letter from the new teacher after the hiring process is complete. Students in Mr. Lee’s classes will not be impacted by schedule changes and can expect to have a permanent teacher very soon.

Thank you for your partnership and support as we make these necessary changes. If you have any questions about any schedule changes, please contact the school at 720-424-0260.

Sincerely,

Atentamente,

Hit and Run Incident

January 17, 2013

Dear Lake International School Families,

At Lake IB, the safety of our students is of utmost importance. I’m writing today to ensure you are aware of an accident that took place outside of Lake International School this morning, and to share some important safety reminders with you.

Early this morning, a Lake International School student was struck by a vehicle while crossing 18th Ave. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene. School staff, Denver Public Schools Safety and Security, Denver Police and Paramedics responded immediately, and the student was taken to Denver Health for treatment. We were very relieved to learn that the student’s injuries were minor and he will make a full recovery. Denver Police will work hard to identify and bring to justice the driver of the vehicle.

While our thoughts continue to be with our student and his family, I wanted to share some important street safety tips with you. Please remind your child to take these precautions when walking on any street.

Street Safety:

  • Cross at the corner or crosswalk.
  • Be aware of all vehicles.
  • Stop, look and cross with adult help, if needed.
  • Be careful and make safe choices.

Thank you for your continued support for our students and our school. I would also like to remind you that students are not permitted to arrive on school grounds prior to 7:15 AM. This is an important safety policy to follow because staff members are not on duty providing supervision until 7:15 AM. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Atentamente,

Amy Highsmith

Incident on 12-13-12

Dear Lake Campus Community:

I would like to inform you of an incident that took place after school yesterday in the school parking lot. A parent of a student brought a handgun into the parking lot and displayed it to several students in a threatening manner. Another parent who witnessed this immediately called 911, and police quickly responded and took the individual into custody. No one was injured, and at no point did the weapon enter the school building.

I would like to commend the swift action taken by the parent who called authorities as well as by our school staff who immediately worked to move all students to a safe area.

I will take this opportunity to remind our students, parents and community that our schools need to be a safe haven for our students. Our schools are places of learning, and it is never acceptable to bring a weapon of any kind real or fake onto any part of our school campus.

As a community we must work together to ensure our schools are safe. I thank you for our efforts to do so. We had counselors on campus today and we will again on Monday as needed if your child would like to talk with someone and work through their feelings about what took place.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 720-424-0260.

Sincerely,

Congrats to one of our very own Knights

Manny Dominguez is an exceptional student athlete that exemplifies a true leader at Lake International School. Manny plays sports year-round, including cross country and soccer (in the same season), basketball and baseball.

Manny completed a very successful soccer season at Lake International School by leading his team to the first ever DPS Middle School Soccer Championship for Lake. This also earned him recognition for DPS “All-League” Middle School Soccer Team for the DPS Prep League.

He always has a great attitude on and off the playing fields. He has never missed a practice. For example, last year just before basketball tryouts, he broke his collar bone and had to sit out for the entire season. He still came to every practice and game. He acted as the team manager, score keeper and cheerleader.

Never hestitating to motivate his teamates he showed true leadership and sportsmanship at all times and encouraged his teammates to do the same. The attitude of the team was: If Manny can step up with a broken bone, so can we. We are looking forward to having him back as our point guard this year for basketball season, to see what else he can bring to the table. Maybe a basketball championship?

In class, he is a dedicated student who cares about his performance and is advanced in many subjects including art & music. He comes to class on time, turns his work in and often stays for homework help. His teachers respect his imput and often ask him to lead in group discussions. He is a true leader and scholar. We are very proud to have Manny as a part of our school communtiy and it has been a privilage to have been his teacher and coach. I’m looking forward to cheering him on in his endeavors beyond Lake International School.

Proposals to change Lake Campus

October 1, 2012

Dear Lake Families,

Superintendent Tom Boasberg has requested a meeting with the Lake Faculty, Parent and Community Stakeholders this Thursday, October 4, 2012 beginning at 5:30 PM in the library regarding a proposal to change our shared campus with STRIVE Prep (formerly West Denver Prep) from a middle school to a high school co-location.

I just learned two weeks ago that the North HS/STRIVE Prep Stakeholder Working Group’s proposal to the DPS Board of Education suggested that STRIVE Prep High School be located on the Lake Campus. I immediately voiced concerns that the Lake parent community and faculty were never informed nor invited to participate in this work group. Due to the extremely short notice being given to our community now, I have asked that decisions be put on hold so that our voices may be heard.

Please join me at the meeting this week! It is critical that you provide input now before a final decision is made. If you cannot attend in person, you may call or provide written feedback. You may send this to school with your child, and return it to the Advisory teacher, or via email to Blanca Ruiz, Communication Specialist/Parent Family Liaison blanca_ruiz@dpsk12.org or directly to me at amy_highsmith@dpsk12.org.

I plan to be present at this meeting if at all possible, however, I am expecting a baby this week and may be in the hospital! Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing you this Thursday evening.

Sincerely,
